The Brophy Broncos defense shined as they shut down Mountain View 26-3 and extended their unbeaten streak to 5-0. 

The Broncos have only allowed 16 points through five games. In this game, they totaled five sacks and had one interception, but that does not tell the story of this defense in this game.

Mountain View had multiple long pass plays, including  a 43-yard completion and a 37-yard completion, both ending in a turnover on downs.

The defense also had a good goal-line stand that forced Mountain View to settle for a field goal to end the first half, which kept the Broncos with the lead at halftime. They held Mountain View, an offense prone to big plays down the field, to only a field goal and overall made life very hard for Mountain View’s offense, especially their quarterback.

First-year head coach Jason Jewell was thrilled with his team’s defense. 

“Our defense has been playing lights out the entire year,” Jewell said. "We gave up three points to a very, very good offense.” 

At the half, the score was 6-3, but in the second half the Broncos separated themselves as the better team. 

In the Broncos' first drive of the second half, they called a trick play. Senior quarterback Matthew Winter threw a lateral pass to safety Anthony Gonzales, who then threw a 61-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Ryan Mehio. The play energized the Broncos and they did not look back.

“I played quarterback my freshman year,” said Gonzales.

Winter was 19-for-21 for 242 yards and two touchdowns. Winter has 11 touchdowns on the season and zero interceptions through five games. Ryan Mehio, senior wideout, also had a great night, racking up seven catches for 130 yards and two touchdowns. 

“This was our first real challenge since Liberty at the beginning, and I think we handled it very well,” Mehio said, “We started off kinda slow on offense, but we came back after halftime and played really well.” 

The Broncos played Liberty in their first game of the season and beat them 9-6 in a tough defensive battle.

This game, the Broncos had nine penalties, which is better than previous games but remains a point of emphasis for improvement. However, compared to 14 in its last game, the team has taken a step forward. The team looks to lower this number as the season continues. However, Mehio believes the Broncos have a lot to be happy about. 

“Our offensive line is playing great, running back is playing great, quarterback is playing great, everything is going pretty well,” said Mehio. 

For a team with playoff aspirations, this game was a statement win and perhaps a sign of what is to come.
