Division I, Section I at Chandler

 

Sunnyside scored 311 points to capture the Division I, Section I championship Saturday night at Chandler High School. The Blue Devils qualified all 13 wrestlers on their slate with 11 standouts earning individual section championships.

The Blue Devils earned their 35th state championship last year after beating Liberty 263-173. The victory was also the fifth state title in a row for Sunnyside, and the second in a row over Liberty, after both programs were reconfigured to the same division for the 2020-2021 season.

Liberty won the D-I/S-II championship held at Mountain Ridge on Saturday with 292 points, 14 state qualifiers and seven section champions, Desert Vista won the D-I/S-III championship held at home on Saturday with 252 points, 14 state qualifiers and six section champions and Mesa Mountain View won the D-I/S-IV championship held at Pinnacle on Saturday with 276 points, 14 state qualifiers and five section champions.

The Division I state tournament will be held at the Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Phoenix from Feb. 16-18 with all finals slated for 5 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 18.
