Results from Saturday's singles and doubles badminton championships at Independence High Scchool.
Division I singles
Result: No. 1 seed Lekha Shrivastava of Desert Vista def. No. 2 seed Nihira Sane of Hamilton 21-6, 19-21, 21-16.
Consolation final: No. 4 Japneet Kaur of Boulder Creek def. No. 3 Maggie Henry of Xavier Prep.
Quote: “It means a lot to me because I’ve been to state all four years, especially for singles. In my first two years I went out in the quarterfinals, and last year I was runner-up. So it means a lot, tying it all together, all my years of playing badminton and getting something to like reward me for all of my training and effort.”—Lekha Shrivastava.
Division I doubles
Result: No. 3 seed Payton Crank/Paige Kroening of Pinnacle def. No. 1 seed Shreya Deshpande/Katheryn Yi of Hamilton 15-21, 21-19, 21-18.
Consolation final: No. 4 Brynlee Evanson/Aubrey Baker of Sandra Day O’Connor def. No. 2 Alexa Englert/Tina Nguyen of Perry.
Quote: “In the second game I felt like we were getting ahead and we just kept the momentum going and had each other’s back.”—Payton Crank.
“The chemistry between us is what makes our team special. We both play softball, so we bonded over that. She’s like a big sister to me, and that helps.”—Paige Kroening.
Division II singles
Result: No. 1 seed Hadley Huffman of Chaparral def. No. 2 Madison Nguyen of Ironwood 21-11, 21-19.
Consolation final: No. 4 Sumedha Balwadgi of Arizona College Prep def. No. 3 Caliyah Howard of Youngker 21-14, 21-18.
Quote: “I felt a little bit of pressure, yeah. This was so surreal. I was so surprised. Ironwood is amazing. I lost to its No. 1 during a tournament earlier in the year. I was keeping a good mindset. I was down 15-10 in the second game, but that’s when I told myself, ‘Get in a groove. Slow it down.’ And then I got to 15 all and it just went up from there. I think that was the most important moment.”
Division II doubles
Result: No. 1 seed Sasha Tijore/Alyssa Ridgley of Ironwood def. unseeded Sophia Tijore/Mariyah Peru-Ray of Ironwood 19-21, 21-14, 21-11.
Consolation final: No. 6 Ruthey Figg/Jaycee Carter of Sunrise Mountain def. No. 5 Jing Liu/Abby Iyer of Arizona College Prep 21-8, 22-20.
Quotes: “Oh, it was so difficult facing our teammates. When we practice, we don’t know. Because there are some days we win and some days they win. It’s 50-50, so going in it was like full focus. We can not let any points drop.”—Sasha Tijore.
“It (winning) was pretty great. Last year we got third so it was redemption. So it was a pretty great feeling.”—Alyssa Ridgley.
“That was super special. It was unreal. We had two in the finals in doubles and one in singles. It shows their hard work. It was tough to have two in there in doubles, because you can’t really cheer for one. But it was fun. It was fun.”—Ironwood coach Brett Stafford.
Unified final
Mesa High’s Carlos Otero/Manuel Ortiz def. Sunrise Mountain’s Payton Sweeny/Trevor Collette in three games.
Quote: “This means a lot. This was my last year here. I had a great partner in Manuel. I had a lot of fun with him, and the competition was really good.”—Carlos Otero.
“I was very happy when we won. It was kind of hard. We were struggling a little bit, but we kept our focus and were a good team. We made sure that we were talking to each other and making positive movements. And I’m happy that he is my partner.”—Manuel Ortiz.
