Xavier was playing only its second match in a month Wednesday night, but there was no sign of rust.

The defending state champs traveled to Corona del Sol in Tempe and handed the Aztecs their first loss of the season with a 3-0 victory in a big 6A matchup.

Senior Ally Brown scored an early goal for Xavier, and junior Olivia Yu put things out of reach with two goals early in the second half. The Gators (4-1) controlled posession for much of the game, as goalie Chloe Cundiff only needed two saves the entire night.

It was only Xavier's fifth game of the season. Two matches were cancelled over Christmas break, but coach Barb Chura didn't mind.

"I really value training as much as possible and I don't think more games necessarily makes our team better," Chura said. "We played well tonight and I was especially pleased with Ally's early goal. We emphasized how important it was to get an early score."

Corona del Sol (5-1-2) kept it close before Yu's two goals early in the second half. The first came from close range thanks to a to an assist from Michal Cagungan. Her second score was all Yu, as she cut through defenders before a perfectly placed shot in the left back corner of the net.

Xavier's only loss came to Boulder Creek before the break, but Chura is not too concerned heading into region play. "Boulder Creek is really good and they have a great goalkeeper, Chura explained. But getting a win like this against a good team was important."
