The regular season for basketball ended Thursday night and 4A, 5A and 6A teams are wondering where or if they fit in and they will find out officially during the Bracket Show scheduled for Saturday morning from 8-10 a.m. on the NFHS Network or on the radio (1580 am in Phoenix).

The Open Division and the 1A-3A brackets for basketball will be released along with the 4A-6A soccer brackets. Two of those teams sure to be watching will be the Sunnyside and Tucson High girls basketball teams.

No. 12 Sunnyside (16-2 in ranking games) beat No. 27 Tucson (6-12) Thursday night on the road to claim a piece of the 6A South Region but they were playing for a bit more. The Blue Devils are ranked No. 18 in the Open Division and the Badgers just might qualify for the Play-In Tournament but it will al depend on what the 52-32 victory by Sunnyside does to their power rankings.

In the game Thursday night, Sunnyside led 12-6 with 6:12 left in the first quarter but the team was held scoreless for over eight minutes and the Badgers tied the game up at 12-12 with 6:05 left in the half. Esabella Barajas hit a three pointer to put Sunnyside up 24-18 with 1:53 left but Tucson cut the lead down to 24-21 at the half.

The Blue Devils came out of the locker room with a smothering defense and the team led 35-21 with 2:31 left in the third and 43-26 after three. Destiney Brown scored four points to cut the lead down to 43-30 with 6:41 left in the game but the Blue Devils finished on a 9-2 run the rest of the way for the 52-32 final.

Barajas led the Blue Devils with 13 points, Dora Medina added 12 and Janae Pritchett scored 10. For Tucson, Brown had nine, Carice Contreras had six and Amaya Trujillo added five.
