There were a few surprises and some firsts during Monday’s singles and doubles tennis championships Monday at the Paseo Racquet Center in Glendale.

Some highlights from the matches:

  • The Division II championships for boys in singles and doubles was an all Catalina Foothills affair. Since six of his players were in the finals, first-year Catalina Foothills coach Ben Loeb just sat back and took notes. “It was a very relaxing day for me,” he said. “I told them to go ahead and compete like you were playing against another team. It’s for a state championship. Put your heart and soul into it and see how you can do. I’m proud of all six of them.”
  • The Litts, Maya and Jaden, had every reason to flex after becoming the first siblings to win singles crowns since 2001. Maya, a freshman, is actually a competitive weightlifter. “This means a lot,” Maya said. “I’ve watched my brother do this twice and see his smile on his face. It was so fun to see people cheering you on today. You don’t get this at regular season tennis. It’s supper quiet. So having a team there just makes it the best. We’re a tennis family. Our dog’s name is Agassi after Andre Agassi. It means everything. We are so excited, and it’s been a great weekend.” Jaden, a junior, won his third consecutive title. “It meant the world that I was playing next to my sister and getting the support from my school and classmates and teachers and my family,” he said. “It meant a lot.”
  • Brophy’s Ryan Zerbib (Pictured below on the right with partner Logan Phillips.) capped his undefeated career with another title. He was a two-time doubles champ and also earned Brophy’s prestigious Academic Athletic award. He’ll be attending Yale next season. This was the fourth year in a row that Brophy won the D-I doubles title. “It’s my senior year,” Zerbib said. “This means so much to finish out successfully. He (doubles partner Logan Phillips) is one of my best friends, so it’s really special that way as well. We are just really excited that it all came together.”
  • The upsets: After losing last year’s D-I final to a teammate, Boulder Creek’s Michelle Bullock defeated No. 1 Tessa Wachtel, handing the Desert Mountain’s star her first loss of the year. No. 4 Leila Petelin and Margaux Gruhn of Notre Dame Prep defeated the No. 1 and 2 seeds to win the D-II doubles crown. Sabino’s David Gonzalez and Adam Olson, the No. 5 seed, defeated the No. 1 and 2 seeds to win the crown despite Olson dislocating a shoulder.
