The hard-working Andrew ‘Mike’ Curtis is preparing for his next basketball adventure.

Perry announced Thursday that Curtis will join BYU’s women’s basketball staff as an assistant after nine successful seasons as Perry’s leader. At BYU, he’ll team up with head coach Lee Cummard, a former Mesa High standout.

Curtis went 157-92 at Perry and reached two 6A finals and an Open Final Four, but the wins weren’t the priority.

“I was blessed to coach some amazing players over the years,” Curtis said. “When I look back I will be most proud of the impact each one of those young ladies made on their respective communities. I never kept track of the wins and losses. Every day I kept the main focus on trying to help each player improve on and off the court.”

Ten of his players went on to play in college, including Vanderbilt University’s Khamil Pierre, the 2023 Arizona Gatorade Player of the Year.

All nine of Curtis’ Perry teams received an AIA Scholar Team Award for maintaining a 3.5 team GPA or higher. Curtis worked a graveyard shift for a major airline during his nine years at Perry but still found time to coach and give back to the game he loves.

He is one of Section 7’s leaders and played an instrumental role in Hoophall West adding a division for girls. Perry informed the media of Curtis’ next big move via email.

“Perry High School and the Chandler Unified School District administration extends their sincere gratitude to coach Curtis for his exceptional leadership and dedication,” according to the statement that was released. “He set the highest standards for student-athletes, established lasting traditions, consistently modeled his vision and integrity, and developed the Perry girls' basketball program into a national-caliber team.”
