CHANDLER – Chandler Prep defeated Miami in straight sets on Tuesday night in Chandler. Following an eight-game losing skid to start the season, the Titans have put together a four-game win streak.
Chandler Prep swept the Vandals 25-3, 25-5, 25-10. The energy was high in the gymnasium as the Titans (5-8, 2-0) earned their second regional win. The win moved Chandler Prep into a tie for first place in the 2A East region with Gilbert Classical.
“(We) are playing together and that was the big thing,” Chandler Prep coach Courtnee Oglesby said. “We have gotten a lot more disciplined in both our defense and our serving. They need to continue to build their confidence. It is important to lean on each other and believe in each other.”
The Titans came out the gates quickly in the opening set with a 12-0 run. Junior opposite hitter Hannah Fox collected an impressive six aces during the scoring barrage. She finished the match with two kills and a team-high 12 aces.
“The camaraderie has been really good,” Fox said. “We all feed off of each other's energy and we don’t put the blame on one another. We hold each other accountable and it makes us stronger as a team.”
Momentum carried into the second set where senior outside hitter Roxy Mason delivered four consecutive aces in the midst of a 9-0 run. Mason finished with three kills and five aces. Fox also capped the set with three straight aces to give the Titans a 25-5 win and a commanding 2-0 set lead.
Chandler Prep spread the stats across the board with 10 players recording at least one kill. Fox added four more aces early in the third set, and junior middle blocker Mikky Dunmar tallied all three of her aces during a decisive 10-1 run that sealed the sweep for the Titans.
The Titans outscored Miami 75-18 overall. Their aggressive style of play led to 21 kills and 32 aces.
Despite the tough loss, Miami coach Stella Lopez credited her team for showing resilience.
“The girls are really good about not giving up,” Lopez said. “I want to keep positive energy. I correct them on their mistakes and tell them to move on to the next play. We have to bring our hard work to games more.”
Oglesby said that the recent winning streak is due to growth in her relatively inexperienced team.
“We are a young team, and it is important for them to believe that we can beat these tougher teams,” Ogelsby said. “We do have a few tough games coming up. I am really excited to see them rise up to the challenge.”
Chandler Prep (5-8, 2-0) will travel to San Tan Charter (11-1, 1-0) on Thursday at 5 p.m.
Miami (1-6, 0-1) plays at Lincoln Prep (2-9, 1-1) on Thursday at 5 p.m.
