No. 2 Marana remains undefeated at 8-0 in ranking games after the Tigers beat No. 17 Corona del Sol 35-14 Tuesday night at home in a 6A Central Region game. The Aztecs dropped to 5-3 on the year but there’s still time to climb into the top 16 with four games left in the regular season starting with a game against No. 12 Sunnyside (7-1) at home on Thursday.

The game started out on a high note for the Aztecs with Harper Thorne returning an interception 20 yards to put Corona del Sol up 7-0 with 11:52 left in the first and that score stood until Isabella Garcia hit fellow freshman Sophia Silverstein from six yards out to tie the game up 7-7 with 2:38 left.

Silverstein caught four touchdown passes on the night and she scored again with 10:49 left in the half after Brooklyn Griffin came up with an interception to start another drive. Roxi Singer picked up an interception one play later and that led to a pitch from Garcia to Singer and then Singer hit Malaysia Roebuck from 30 yards out on the trick play to put the Tigers up 21-7 with 9:18 left in the half. Garcia and Silverstein connected again from 12 yards out to put Marana up 28-7 with 6:05 left.

A series of three interceptions end the half with Mariah Ruelas stopping a Marana score at the one, followed by another interception from Singer, but Amyah Anderson ended another Marana threat with 1:04 left.

Garcia put the Tigers up 35-7 on her last TD pass to Silverstein with 6:16 left in the third quarter and the Sofia Villone responded with a 52-yard scoring pass to Anderson for the 35-14 final.

Villone ended with 146 yards passing with the TD and Garcia went 33-46 for 298 yards and four TDs. Roebuck had 109 yards receiving on 10 catches with a TD, Sadie Brown had 75 yards receiving on eight catches, Mazie Brown had 69 yards receiving on six catches and Silverstein had 56 yards receiving on seven catches with four TDs.

Marana hosts 4A power Salpointe (8-0) on Thursday night in the biggest game from Southern Arizona.
