PHOENIX —  When fans attend an Arizona College Prep boys beach volleyball game, chances are they will see somebody from the Lewis family in action.

The dad, John Lewis, coaches the team. His son, Tyler Lewis, plays on the team. The coach's daughter, Sophia Lewis, manages the team and runs its social media.

Oh yeah, and don’t forget about the younger kids in the family who help the team with warmups and run the scoreboards.

It’s the program's first year at ACP, and this family has already become the face of the boys beach volleyball team.

ACP beach volleyball player Tyler Lewis said that since he typically played basketball, his dad was originally only going to put in to be the assistant basketball coach, as he had been for his son in the past.

However, after seeing an open position for a boys beach volleyball coach, Tyler Lewis encouraged his dad to apply for it.

“I knew that he could transfer those coaching skills to a sport that he was really good at,” Tyler Lewis said.

John Lewis played indoor volleyball for Arizona State University. He was also an amateur beach volleyball player.

“When I was younger, he used to do a lot of tournaments, and I remember going to a lot of those tournaments, playing in the sand and watching him play,” Tyler Lewis said.

Sophia Lewis said that since she was not playing a sport this year, she took her dad up on the offer of the position of team manager and social media coordinator for the team.

The daughter said that she thinks it is cool how her entire family is contributing to this new program, and that she is used to them being involved in every aspect of her life.

The kids’ mom, Antonella Lewis, said that with her husband balancing coaching and his job, the whole family has had to move things around to work out a schedule.

“
I love seeing them all work together, and they just get the job done because that's what we do,” Antonella Lewis said.

Their younger kids, Abigail, Vincent, Henry and Eleanor Lewis, also said they enjoy contributing to this program.

They all said that they love grabbing the volleyballs, being in the sand, helping with the scoreboards and playing with the players to help them practice.

“I would like to join the volleyball team when I get older, because I like seeing how my dad coaches them,” Vincent Lewis said.

Their dad said that since the new team has no budget whatsoever, the volleyball player’s parents contribute by bringing snacks for the team each game, which his kids love to indulge in.

“They’re basically considered part of the team,” John Lewis said.

Coach Lewis said that this season, he wants the team to establish an identity.

John Lewis said that he has a belief system in how he thinks sports should be played. He said that his team is respectable, honorable and hardworking.

Coach Lewis also believes that people should leave a place better than they found it. So he makes sure the team always tidies up after every game.

“I believe and expect they will be better people and obviously better volleyball players by the end of this program,” John Lewis said.

The ACP boys beach volleyball finished the season 8-4 overall and fourth in the region. They have games on Monday and Wednesday nights.
