GILBERT — All-around athlete Timi Akinyoyenu has really found his place among San Tan Charter School athletics, having a stellar senior season.

After transferring from Chandler Prep to San Tan Charter School before the start of the 2024-25 football season, Akinyoyenyu, who is a part of the graduating class of 2026 and plays wide receiver and defensive back, has absolutely dominated the football field in his short time as a Roadrunner.

While Akinyoyenu only appeared in six games as a Roadrunner last year due to transfer rules, he still racked up 327 all-purpose yards, an interception, and six touchdowns, with two of those touchdowns happening in his debut in the green and gold.

The WR/DB is also the team's go-to kicker, meaning Akinyoyenu almost never comes off the field.

Fast-forward to Akinyoyenu’s senior campaign, with the regular season completed, he sits with 513 yards receiving and eight receiving touchdowns, with his defensive and kicking skills being nothing short of stellar.

He was able to intercept the ball five times and had a total of 54 points coming from kicking.

As the Roadrunners prepare for the postseason, Akinyoyenu currently sits first among his teammates in receiving yards per game and interceptions, and is tied for first in receiving touchdowns with fellow senior and WR/DB Brody Prassas.

“Timi can be as good as Timi wants to be,” coach Chase Cartwright said. “When he is engaged and locked in and focused, I just think he’s one of the top five or top 10 2A players in our state.”

“I transferred mainly for football purposes,” Akinyoyenu said. “I watched some of the football games from here. I liked the program that was going on here and decided to join.”

A contributor to Akinyoyenu’s transfer was the camaraderie that the Roadrunners are built on.

“The brotherhood is a lot closer, I like it a lot,” Akinyoyenu said. “The coaching staff is really looking forward to your future, trying to help you out, so I love that we get to have that good relationship with each other and a good relationship with the coaches.”

“We’re super lucky to have him. He’s an incredible teammate,” Cartwright said. “You know, obviously, on the field, he can do some pretty special things, but Timi’s got some gifts that you just can’t coach.”

While Akinyoyenu absolutely dominates on the football field, his talents also make their way to the soccer field, as he plays striker in the spring.

“It should be really fun,” Akinyoyenu said. “So I’ve already been talking to the soccer coach to get out there and start kicking a little bit.”

After his time as a Roadrunner, Akinyoyenu hopes to play in college at the D1 level.

“I am really looking forward to playing, you know, those are my dreams and aspirations,” Akinyoyenu said.

And with end-of-season honors to come out soon, there is no doubt that Akinyoyenu is in the running for some high accolades.

“I think he’ll be in the running for potentially some all-state, all-region honors,” Cartwright said. “And hopefully in the running for 2A player of the year. He just doesn’t get off the field.”
