D-II Cross Country: Yohanes van Meerten sets course record

Saturday, Nov. 15: Cave Creek Golf Course
The Ironwood Ridge girls bounced back from a second place finish to Flagstaff last year to defeat the Eagles 45-84 this fall to win the fourth state championship in program history, and the first under head coach Michael Smith. Smith led the Catlina Foothills girls to a state title in 2014 and the Ironwood Ridge boys to a championship in 2022.

Individually, Flagstaff senior Taylor Biggambler (18:44.8) held off Ironwood Ridge senior Sorella Natale (19:23.4) to win her first state championship. Biggambler took second last year and third place as a freshman. Mica Mountain took third as a team and Flagstaff sophomore Kylyn Taylor came in third place as an individual.

The Flagstaff boys won for the second year in a row, beating Campo Verde 54-85, for the eighth championship in program history. Arizona College Preparatory (128) took third.

Flagstaff junior Yohanes van Meerten broke the course record set by former Tuba City standout Billy Orman in 2010. Orman ran the course in the time of 15:03.3 and Meerten ran with a time of 14:56.2. Meerten became the first runner in Arizona history to break 15 minutes. Flagstaff senior Alex Bland (15:48.5) took second after winning it all in 2023 and 2024. Horizon senior Haines Gauzens (16:00.4) took third.
