The Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA) announced ten weight classes for the inaugural girls wrestling season. The girls will compete at sectionals at the conclusion of the regular season and will be competing for state championships in the main arena held in Prescott Valley.
“The weight classes are a start for getting the girls wrestling underway in Arizona,” said Flowing Wells athletic director Pat Weber. “We plan to have an All Girls tournament and do the finals with the boys together. It's a great start to recognizing the sport of women's wrestling.”
The Flowing Wells Invitational is entering its 52nd year and it is one of the most prestigious wrestling tournaments in Arizona and the Southwest. The invitational took the lead last year by having some bouts outside and the addition of a tournament for the girls this year will be facilitated by opening up both gyms on the Flowing Wells campus to competition.
The Flowing Wells Invitational is scheduled for Jan. 18-19.
