January 13, 2019 by Andy Morales, AZPreps365
The 53rd Flowing Wells Wrestling Invitational will take place this Friday and Saturday. Billed as one of the most important wrestling invitationals in the southwest, 36 teams from Arizona, New Mexico and Texas are scheduled to attend. In addition, there will be an invitational for girls as part of the new opportunity offered by the AIA this winter. The host committee will also hand out student scholarships.
Sunnyside scored 299 points to bring home the title last year, Queen Creek (167.5) took second and Walden Grove (156) came in third.
Former Sunnyside standout and current Penn State freshman Roman Bravo-Young was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler for the fourth straight year. Bravo-Young joined former Sunnyside wrestler and ASU standout Evan Larkin and former Sunnyside standout and ASU coach Thom Ortiz as the only wrestlers to be named Outstanding Wrestler four years in a row.
From the 2019 field, Sunnyside was the Division I state champion last year, Cienega came in third in the D-II division and Walden Grove was the D-III runner-up.
